The beautiful Ojai Valley has been home to cattle (and the people who raise them) since 1837 when it was granted to Fernando Tico as Rancho Ojai. Vaqueros, then cowboys, roamed the Valley, and their spirits live on. You can still find plenty of horses to ride and it's not unknown to see a cowboy or two walking down the main street of town!

Modern Cowboys (and cowgirls), ranchers and people that work with horses. cattle and other livestock, have developed a culture that is a blend of frontier and Victorian values. The hazardous work of the modern rancher/cowboy has also bred a tradition of self-dependence and individualism, with great value placed on personal honesty, responsibility and integrity.

These values are exemplified in poetry and songs.
